Extracurricular activities can have a significant impact on university applications. Admissions committees often consider these activities as a way to gauge an applicant’s interests, passions, and personal development beyond academic achievements. While they add a positive effect to a student’s CV, knowing which and how many activities to mention is essential so as to retain their impact.

Extracurricular activities such as volunteer work, playing sports, language proficiencies, music, dance, art and theatre, etc. are a great way of demonstrating passion and commitment. Engaging in extracurricular activities shows that you are dedicated and committed to pursuing your interests. It indicates that you are willing to invest time and effort into areas outside of the classroom.

Participating in team sports, student government, or other group activities can demonstrate your ability to work well with others and take on leadership roles. These skills are valuable in the university environment and beyond. Extracurricular activities also provide opportunities for personal growth, allowing you to develop skills such as time management, discipline, perseverance, and resilience. Universities value applicants who demonstrate these qualities.

Engaging in specific extracurricular activities over an extended period can showcase your dedication and expertise in a particular field. Having an idea as to your majors and engaging in extracurricular activities of similar fields may prove beneficial in your applications as well.

Another important function of having a strong portfolio, is to distinguish you from the crowd.  Universities receive numerous applications from academically strong students, and extracurricular activities can help you stand out from the competition. Your unique experiences and achievements can make a memorable impression on the admissions committee.

Building a profile/portfolio is not just beneficial to your applications. It also demonstrates your commitment to making a positive impact on others. It showcases your altruism and empathy, qualities that universities want their potential students to exhibit.

When including extracurricular activities on your university application, it is important to highlight your level of involvement, leadership positions held, awards or recognition received, and any notable achievements or impacts made. However, it is essential to balance your extracurricular activities with your academics, as universities also prioritize strong academic performance. Quality is often more important than quantity, so focus on a few activities that genuinely interest you and allow you to make meaningful contributions.
